Golden
Generation
is a 1-day event for the elderly under the care of Telok Blangah Crescent Moral
Neighbourhood Link. This event was held on the 1st April 2012
(Sunday), mainly within Labrador Nature
Reserve. In this event, we have recruited 33 students from NTU and NIE
with little or no experience in volunteering work. We hope that through this
pilot project that VM has initiated, we are able to create a new avenue for non
regular volunteering students to contribute their service. This is in line with
our objective of promoting the spirit of volunteerism among the student
population.
As this is the first
time we are introducing a new beneficiary to the NTU student population, we
kept the targeted numbers small to gauge receptiveness.
The
event started off at Labrador Park, where station games were set up. We wanted
to encourage active participation and interaction between the student
volunteers and the elderly. The location and weather were excellent as they got
to enjoy the bright sunny weather, in the lovely park during the morning. To
our surprise, the elderly were not only enthusiastic; they were also
participating in the station games eagerly. Stamps were collected on their game
scorecards whenever they completed a station together with their volunteers.
The
participants then moved on to the City Bus Tour, where the elderly were brought
around central Singapore. This programme was specially added in as many of the
elderly did not have the chance to travel out to explore this highly urbanised
and developed area. The student volunteers were given a chance to interact and
share their knowledge of the recent developments of Singapore with the elderly
as they passed by the iconic buildings during the tour.
After the tour, it was
time to take a rest at the centre, where the elderly and the volunteers had
their lunch. The all-time favourite Bingo game was then carried out, to give
the elderly more opportunities to win prizes. The mood was intense and exciting
as more than 20 volunteers and elderly won prizes.
The event ended at
around 1430hrs, with both the elderly and volunteers walking off with many
goodies supplied by our kind sponsors. The elderly thanked their volunteers
profusely, and we were glad that both groups have benefitted from Golden
Generation 2012.
Lastly, the event
will not be possible without the generous donations from the following
sponsors: Nanyang Technological University Student Affairs Office, Lee
Foundation, YoungChange Makers, The Sample Store, Hak Kim Trading Company, Gold
Roast Food Industry (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., The Perfect Give, Win Win Food
Singapore Pte. Ltd., Amoy Canning Corporation (Singapore) Ltd., Soon Teck Hup
Kee Pte. Ltd., Leung Kai Fook Medical Company (Pte.) Ltd., Sinhua Hock Kee
Trading (S) Pte. Ltd., Unilever, Goh Yeow Seng Pte. Ltd., Sin Hwa Dee Foodstuff
Industries Pte. Ltd., PUB, DKSH, The Golden Concepts, Tai Hua Food Industries
Pte. Ltd., New Eastern (1971) Pte. Ltd., and Borden Co. (Pte.) Ltd.
We sincerely thank you
from the bottom of our hearts, and we look forward to seeing more people at Golden Generation 2013.

about us
NTU WSC Volunteer Management
Welfare Services Club is a non-academic constituent club in NTU which provide an umbrella of voluntary activities and social work.
We consists of 3 committees, namely Regular Service Projects (RSPs), Special Projects (SPs), and Supporting Committees (SCs). Volunteer Management (VM) is currently one of the Special Projects under WSC.
Volunteer Management organizes events to expose the students and staff population of NTU, who are not regular volunteers, to volunteering.
Every year, we will source for different beneficiaries which are those that we are not regularly helping out in. The events we organize differ yearly ranging from fund raisers to outings except for our annual 3 day camp for underprivileged children, Kids' World, in December.
Our events range from 1 day to 3 days for the beneficiaries and for every event we plan, we would need volunteers. Hence, this provides an avenue for students and staff who are unfamiliar with or are unable to volunteer regularly to be able to learn more about volunteering.
VM serves to act as a bridge which links the beneficiaries to a larger population and to potential regular volunteers.
We hope more volunteers like YOU will join our BIG family! :)
