this is a little late, but never to late to know that Kids' World 2011 was a huge success! HURRAY! (:
Kids’ World 2011 was held on 13th to 15th December in NTU and Bollywood Veggies Farm. This has been a signature annual event for Volunteer Management (VM), whereby we aim to bring more fun and laughter into the lives of the disadvantaged children, while inspiring NTU students to devote more time and effort into such meaningful events.
This year, we have decided to increase both the intake of children and volunteers, so as to extend the reach to more participants for Kids’ World 2011. From the overwhelming sign up rate during our recruitment drive, we have recruited 130 student volunteers, which is an increase of 30 from last year. To further broaden our outreach, we invite children from some Family Services Centres (FSCs) whom we have never worked with before. In all, we had 111 children from Thye Hua Kwan Moral Service Centre (Bukit Panjang), Central Singapore Nurture Programme @ OnePeople.sg, Fei Yue Student Care Centre (Choa Chu Kang) and Nurture Programme @ First Toa Payoh. It was indeed heartwarming to see the familiar faces among the children and volunteers, having known that they had enjoyed themselves thoroughly in the previous Kids’ World event.
In addition, to encourage children to care more for the environment, our excursion on Day 2 was to Bollywood Veggies, an organic farm located at Kranji. Children had fun playing treasure hunts and doing up their own Christmas decorations and scarecrows in the farm.
Games on Day 1 and Day 3 held in NTU were designed to cultivate more team spirit and strategic planning among the participants. In addition, as we had grouped the children from different FSCs together in the same group, we hope to create a more interactive environment for the children to communicate with one another.
Part of Kids’ World tradition is to have a simple and fun mass dance. Both the children and volunteers danced to the catchy tune of “Happy Boys and Girls” by Aqua, which is in line with our theme for this year’s event: Mr. and Little Miss. The easy steps got the children dancing on their feet whenever the song was played.
Finale night on the third day was also exceptionally exciting as all the children came together to perform what they had planned over the 3 days. Some groups sang Christmas songs in conjunction with the coming festive season while some danced to various popular songs. After the performance, each group was given a cake with their group names written on it and the children enjoyed the cake cutting session while happily chatting within the group. A final photo taking session with their group marked the end of the tiring yet fun filled three day event. The children then bade farewell to the brothers and sisters who had taken good care of them over the 3 days. We look forward to seeing these happy faces again next year!
We will like to thank our generous sponsors and partners who have helped VM and Kids’ World 2011 in one way or another. This event would not be possible without donations from Lee Foundation, Tan Chin Tuan Foundation, Young ChangeMakers, and Nanyang Technological University Student Affairs Office. In addition, many thanks to the following sponsors for their generous in-kind donations: BJ Food Pte. Ltd., Charriol, Cosmo Gourmet Catering, Delcie’s Desserts and Cakes Pte Ltd, Ego Pharmaceuticals Singapore, Frolick, Happy Eyes Group Pte Ltd, Ice Cube Café, KFC, Lomolicious, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, My Glamour Place, Nanyang Optical Co. about us
NTU WSC Volunteer Management
Welfare Services Club is a non-academic constituent club in NTU which provide an umbrella of voluntary activities and social work.
We consists of 3 committees, namely Regular Service Projects (RSPs), Special Projects (SPs), and Supporting Committees (SCs). Volunteer Management (VM) is currently one of the Special Projects under WSC.
Volunteer Management organizes events to expose the students and staff population of NTU, who are not regular volunteers, to volunteering.
Every year, we will source for different beneficiaries which are those that we are not regularly helping out in. The events we organize differ yearly ranging from fund raisers to outings except for our annual 3 day camp for underprivileged children, Kids' World, in December.
Our events range from 1 day to 3 days for the beneficiaries and for every event we plan, we would need volunteers. Hence, this provides an avenue for students and staff who are unfamiliar with or are unable to volunteer regularly to be able to learn more about volunteering.
VM serves to act as a bridge which links the beneficiaries to a larger population and to potential regular volunteers.
We hope more volunteers like YOU will join our BIG family! :)
