KW'11 is a 3-day non residential camp arranged for underprivileged children from various Family Services Centres around Singapore. Do play a part by volunteering for our Decemeber event!

Event details are as such:

Funthalon 2011

Funthalon 2011 is an event organised by Volunteer Management (VM) of the NTU Welfare Services Club (WSC). The one-day event was held in NTU, on 18th June 2011.

There were 27 participants, aged 7 to 14, from Dreams @ Kolam Ayer. This is the first time VM is working with Dreams @ Kolam Ayer, and it is hoped that Funthalon 2011 can create more opportunities for future collaborations between us.
In addition, Funthalon 2011 was a great platform for the committee members to interact with the children and better prepare themselves for the planning of the annual event, Kids’ World 2011.

The children were split into 5 groups and each group comprised of a Group Leader, 2 committee members and about 5 children. We started with some Icebreakers to allow the children to know the volunteers, and it was also a form of warming up for the activities that followed.

After the Icebreakers, the groups gathered and played a series of station games. The games were designed to cultivate a spirit of teamwork among the participants. Games like “100 Seconds No NG” and “Pencil Case” required effective communication amongst the group members for successful completion. Furthermore, the games required participants to be more active and they were more competitive in nature. It was hoped that through the games, the group members would be able to foster stronger bonds among themselves.

Despite spending a short 3 hours together, I believed that most of the committee members would agree with me that they had spent a meaningful afternoon with the children.

As for the children, I hope that the event has imprinted their minds with wonderful memories and may the skills that they learned through the games be beneficial for them in their promising future. And we hope to see the children at Kids’ World 2011. It will definitely be a yet another fun-filled experience for our friends from Dreams @ Kolam Ayer.

Hello all!

We have just concluded our June event - Funthalon, on the 18th of June! It was a fun-filled day spent with the beneficiaries of Dreams @ Kolam Ayer! Stay tuned for the photos and post-event update!

Aside, the VM Committee of AY 10/11 also had a great mingling and bonding session over dinner that night! The turnout was "fabulous!" (Kok Yong, 2011). Much were shared that night, especially gossip! :D I'm sure everyone had their chance to know each other better too! :)

Funthalon marked the last event for AY 10/11. We are in the midst of planning for our retreat, so stay tuned as well! :)

To our wonderful VMers, Thank YOU for all your hard work, support, sweat, tears, laughter, etc.! VM will not be the same without each and everyone of you!! The 4 of us sincerely thank you :)

Eye Am Aware 2011

Eye Am Aware 2011 is a two-part instalment of our awareness programme for the Visually Handicapped. An awareness booth was first set up on 1st and 2nd March along the North-South linkway in NTU, to educate the NTU population about the various types of eye conditions.

A pilot project between RSP Visually Handicapped and Volunteer Management, this event is essentially a food hunt involving volunteers from NTU and beneficiaries from the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped and RSP Visually Handicapped. Conducted on 27th March 2011, it was a Sunday well spent, with much joy and laughter shared, and new friendships made.

Prior to the event, volunteers had to attend a Volunteers’ Briefing on 08th March 2011. This briefing gave an overview of the entire event, and representatives from SAVH were invited to conduct a Basic Sighted Technique for most of our volunteers who had no prior experience in handling the visually handicapped. This training definitely came in handy, for tips such as guiding the VH on accessing escalators were shared.

A trial run was conducted on 13th March 2011 for the Station Masters and Group Leaders to be familiar with the programme. This proved to be useful, as games and routes were improvised, to provide the best for our participants. This also allowed both committees to know one another, and new friendships were quickly forged.

With the event shirts given out to the volunteers and beneficiaries, the crowd of 165 participants were split into their respective groups to get to know one another better. Sponsored drinks from Pokka were given out to all participants to quench their thirst to be prepared for the day ahead. The 10 teams were split into two routes – with Groups 1-5 undertaking Route 1 and Groups 6-10 undertaking Route 2. Following a short introduction by Xue Qi (Events Head of RSPVH), the teams started their first game of the day, which would determine the order that they would move off. The atmosphere remained high with everyone bursting with energy and all prepared for the day ahead!

Teams were dispatched to their respective stations, but not before linking food items! These items could be in a variety of languages and dialects, but each starting alphabet of the next food item had to be the ending alphabet of the preceding food item. Teams put their creativity to good use here, with items such as Acar, Rojak, Each a Cup, amongst many others.

With each main game area located at Novena (Square 2), Toa Payoh (Town Park) and Dhoby Ghaut (Pavillion at Istana Park), much laughter was heard. The beneficiaries truly enjoyed themselves with the games! These games required the participants to rely on their senses – smelling spices and differentiating them; touching figures on pictures and replicating them; tasting drinks and guessing them – all of these brought much joy to everyone! Kudos to the Station Masters for being the brains behind these games, and for improvising them on the spot to challenge the beneficiaries to a higher level, while stretching their limits. These unsung heroes truly deserve rounds of applause! ☺

The event concluded on a high note, with bulging tummies and prizes to boot! Sponsored Subway cookies were given out as well. Notwithstanding the prizes given out, everyone was a winner that day, with new friendships made and bonds forged. Thank you, Group Leaders, for being the ones to lead the groups and for ensuring maximum fun for everyone! Photographs were taken with memories to stay, and unwillingness to leave when the busses came!

This pilot collaboration between the two committees was definitely a fruitful one, with like-minded individuals coming together to achieve a common objective. This event has definitely broadened my horizons and widened my perspectives, and how we must appreciate what we have been blessed with. It's CNY!!

To spread the festive cheer to our elderly friends, the VMers went down to AWWA to help out with the RSP Elders' Annual CNY Event on 19th Feb! RSP Elders is a Regular Service Project under the Welfare Services Club (WSC) family as well! :)

The VMers put up a performance for our elderly friends, which brought much smiles and delight to their faces! We did spot many talents within the committee on that day!! Acting talents, singing talents, ... You name it, we have it!

VMers also acted as helpers throughout the event, be in serving food or guiding the elderly along in games!

Kids' World 2010

Kids’ World is an annual event organised by the Volunteer Management (VM) of the NTU Welfare Services Club (WSC). The event is a platform to promote a spirit of volunteerism among students who are not regular volunteers.

From 27th to 29th October 2010, we held a recruitment drive to attract students and staff of NTU to volunteer for the event. It was encouraging to note that the recruitment drive was very well received with over 200 students expressing keen interest in the event. In line with the committee’s objectives, priority was given to students who were not from WSC during the short-listing process. A briefing session was then conducted on 15th November 2010 for all selected volunteers to update them with regards to the event and the safety precautions to note.

This year, VM introduced seniors to support the Group Leaders during Kids’ World 2010. They were ex-VM members, members from NTU WSC Ignite Change as well as the WSC 16th management committee members. By engaging her alumni, VM hopes to promote continuity between batches of members. On top of that, there were plans to expand the scale of Kids’ World in the subsequent years. The introduction of seniors allowed VM to experiment for this and prepare for an increase in the number of participants.

Kids’ World 2010 was held from 28th to 30th December 2010. The beneficiaries were from 4 different centres namely Nurture Programme @First Toa Payoh Kids’ Read, Nurture Programme @OnePeople.SG; Rotary Family Service Centre; and Tampines Family Service Centre. This is the second time that we are working with Rotary Family Service Centre and Tampines Family Service Centre. Both centres were very supportive of our event. It was equally heart-warming to see many familiar faces among the children.

This year, the games were designed to cultivate a spirit of teamwork among the participants. Games like the Maze and the Relay Game required effective communication between volunteers and children for successful completion. Furthermore, the games required participants to be more active and they were more competitive in nature. It was hoped that through the games, the group members would be able to foster stronger bonds among themselves.

Following last year’s success, a mass dance was held and the children danced to the song, “We are the Care Bears”, from the movie Care Bears: Oopsy Does It! The choreography was simpler and thus much easier for both children and volunteers to learn. The music was so catchy that the participants will start dancing to the song whenever it was played.

On the second day, we went to the Singapore Discovery Centre. It was a first for some of the participants and was thus a whole new experience for them. To foster a sense a group identity, all participants for Kids’ World 2010 wore the event t-shirt for the trip. The participants had fun engaging with the interactive exhibits in the centre. And we ended the day with a movie, Gullliver’s Travel, at the centre’s own movie theatre.

The finale on the last day was a display of talents from all the participants. Some sang, some acted while many others danced. It was a memorable evening for all. Following these group performances, there was a prize presentation. Everyone was a winner.

This year, the schedule for the activities was closely adhered to and we managed to end the days promptly without much delay. More group time was allocated for bonding as well as discussing their performances for the finale. This is an improvement from the past years after reviewing the feedback from the previous camps.

I believe that most of the volunteers would agree with me that they had spent three days in one of the most meaningful ways. I hope that when they reflect upon the camp, the happy memories they had would bring smiles to their faces. No doubt, Kids’ World 2010 has been a memorable experience of their university days. More importantly, I hope that this event has raised their interest in future volunteering. As for the children, I hope that the camp has imprinted their minds with wonderful memories and may the important lessons and lifelong skills that they learned be beneficial for them in their promising future.

It's Day 0! Kids' World 2010 is starting soon! Are you excited? :)

For volunteers, below are some details to take note!

Reporting time and venue:

Post-Psoriasis Event

Will You Hold My Hand? – Psoriasis Awareness Booth in NTU
12th - 13th October 2010

Will You Hold My Hand? is a collaboration project with the Psoriasis Association of Singapore (PAS). The event aims to spread awareness of psoriasis as a non-contagious skin disease to the student and staff population of NTU. In addition, we hope to stop discrimination and stigmatization of psoriasis patients.

Prior to the booth manning, the VM members attended a briefing by Dr. Colin Theng, President of PAS, on 5 Oct’10. Dr. Theng shared with us about psoriasis and how the disease affects the patients, both physically and socially. There was also Nik, a psoriasis patient, who shared with us his life with the disease.

A two-days booth was set up at the Linkway@North-South Spine. The VM members acted as youth ambassadors for PAS and actively reached out to the people who walked passed the booth. Pamphlets with information about psoriasis were given out to the passersby. The students and staff were asked to show their support to the patients by writing words of encouragement and pasting their messages onto a hand-shaped pledge board. They were also asked if they would like to pledge against the discrimination of psoriasis patients by signing on the pledge forms. Although some of the VM members found it difficult to approach the students as they were usually rushing to their classes, we had collected more than 200 pledges and well wishes. It was heartening to know that our fellow schoolmates are empathetic towards the psoriasis patients.

Will You Hold My Hand? – Road Show @Anchorpoint Shopping Mall
24th October 2010

The road show was organized in conjunction with World Psoriasis Day, which fell on 29 Oct’10. World Psoriasis Day is an annual day specially dedicated to the people with psoriasis.
Dr. Lim Wee Kiak, MP for Sembawang GRC, opened the event. Following that, I had the honour of presenting the pledge board to Dr. Theng. The day was lined up with performances, talks by dermatologists as well as sharing sessions by psoriasis patients.

VM members acted as youth ambassadors and actively reached out to the public in and around the shopping mall. They helped raised awareness of psoriasis by giving out pamphlets and engaging with the people through simple quizzes.

I have not heard of psoriasis before this collaboration. This awareness programme not only made me understand the disease better but it also allows me to feel more for patients suffering from skin diseases in general. I believe that our efforts will not be in vain and the people will continue to spread the word that psoriasis is not a contagious disease, and they will not discriminate against them.

To all the psoriasis patients out there, VM will hold your hand!! ☺

World Psoriasis Day 2010

For our first event in this new academic year, we have collaborated with the Psoriasis Association of Singapore (PAS) to raise awareness of Psoriasis, a non-contagious skin disease.

A 2-day booth was set up along the linkway from North to South Spine on 12th and 13th October, to allow the student body of NTU to find out more about Psoriasis.

This year, World Psoriasis Day 2010 will be held on 24th October 2010, Sunday. There will be a roadshow held at Anchorpoint from 10am - 7pm. Expect exciting programs!

Kite flying at Marina Barrage

The objective of this kite flying event is to bond the committee members of Volunteer Management and the children from Rotary Family Service Centre. This event also serves as a platform to allow the committee to better understand the spirit of volunteerism.

The event started with mass games, which required the different groups of children and volunteers to pit their wits against each other. The games warmed the children up to the volunteers, promoting bonding between the two parties. Next, due to the hot weather, some “Wet” station games were planned. These required the children to perform certain tasks which required them to splash water or dip in water. The children were then brought to the water playground to round up the first half of the event. They were extremely excited about the water playground and enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

After changing to dry clothes and finishing their snacks from Old Chang Kee, the children were all ready for the second part of the event. They were each given a plain kite of their own and were then required to decorate their own kites with the markers provided. The idea of letting the children decorate their own kites was to promote their creativity and allow them to express themselves freely. It was very well received as the children demonstrated a lot of talent.

This exercise also gave them a platform to express and convey what they really believe in and feel inside their hearts. For example, there was a girl who wrote “No Fighting and No War” on her kite. It was very heartwarming to see that because at such a tender age, the children are already rather mature in their thinking.

When we were about to fly the kites at Marina Barrage, we realised that all kite flying activities had to stop due to the National Day Parade Rehearsal. We were not pre-warned about it and in order not to disappoint the children; we decided to transport the children to West Coast Park to fly the kites instead. With the cooperation and efficiency of the committee, we were able to change the venue within 30minutes. From the laughter and the joy seen on the faces we knew that the children definitely enjoyed themselves and that the purpose of the event was fulfilled. Even though the children were reluctant to leave, we had to bring all of them back to the Family Service Centre. The whole event ended with a prize presentation ceremony at the Family Service Centre.

In a whole, everyone enjoyed themselves that day! :)

SPDition at NTU

SPDition@NTU is a joint event held by Volunteer Management (VM), NTU Hall 8 MAXAR Committee and Society for the Physically Disabled Singapore (SPD). Other than promoting volunteerism amongst students in NTU, this event also served to expose the WSC members to the physically disabled community. The venue of this event was set to be within NTU campus to let the clients (beneficiaries of SPD) experience life in NTU and to encourage them to work towards entering university and obtaining a degree.

The volunteers attended a wheelchair handling training session two days before the actual event. Useful wheelchair handling techniques such as maneuvering of wheelchair on uneven ground and different methods to overcome obstacles were taught. The volunteers were also given a chance to have some hands-on exercises on the techniques explained. Everyone had great fun and bonded very well through this training. The volunteers have definitely brought back with them practical skills that will be useful to them in anyway.

On the actual day, the event started off with a bus tour around NTU. There were two members from the MAXAR committee who played the role of a “tour guide” and shared with the clients their experiences in NTU, and at the same time showing them our pleasant garden campus. After the tour, the clients gathered for refreshments and were shortly split into 5 groups for the station games. Some sports and simple team games were played. The clients loved the “Guess the idiom” game because they were given the chance to showcase their drawings to the volunteers who were supposed to guess. One of the clients even wrote down the meanings of the idioms and brought the drawings back to keep. Everyone had enjoyed the games very much and displayed teambuilding spirit throughout.

The event ended with a mini prize presentation to reward the clients and volunteers with medals and certificates. The clients were extremely happy when they received the medal because that was maybe the first time for some of them to feel honoured and receive prestigious awards such as medals. One of them even took the courage to stand in front and thank everyone for providing them this opportunity to come to NTU and they will never forget this memorable experience. Refreshments were also provided to fill those hungry stomachs after a long day of fun.

It is actually quite disheartening to know that some kids who were actively running around playing games during the event were actually diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, a group of hereditary muscle diseases that weaken the muscles that move the human body. Nevertheless, we hope that SPDition@NTU was a valuable experience especially for the clients as it allowed them to engage in activities related to sports and games which they might not have tried before. SPD is also very satisfied with NTU’s facilities for being disabled friendly and this will definitely benefit the physically disabled shall they come to NTU as undergraduates.

Healthy Mind, Healthy Life

Volunteer Management (VM) collaborated with the Singapore Association of Mental Health (SAMH) to set up an exhibition for three days in our school compound to spread awareness on mental wellness and illnesses to the NTU population. Besides having our own committee members to man the booth, we had the SAMH staff stationed at the booth to help answer any queries from the public.

Response to the exhibition was positive. The students and staff took some time to stop by the booth and browse at the collection of brochures and posters set up. Furthermore, many people returned to submit their completed “word search”, which was given to them when they walked past the booth. We also had people who stopped by the booth and enquired about mental health issues. Throughout the three days, we realized that the students were keen to know more about insomnia as well as anxiety management.

In addition, we helped to raise funds by selling paintings and other merchandises made by the SAMH clients.

Last but not least, it was heartening to know that some students expressed their interest in volunteering with SAMH. This aligns with our objective to promote volunteerism amongst the NTU population.

Volunteer Management would like to take this chance to thank SAMH for this collaboration project and making it a success.

Kids' World 2009

Kids' World, a 3 day non-residential camp, is an annual event held by WSC-VM to raise awareness of underpriviledged kids to the student and staff population of NTU, and to provide an avenue for non regular volunteers to encourage volunteering.

This year, our beneficiaries from Rotary Family Service Centre, Rotary Student Care Centre and Tampines Family Service Centre, which was totally different from last year’s beneficiaries. As such, it was a brand new experience for the kids and to the volunteers who participated in Kids’ World 2008, and of course to the VM Committee as this is our first time working with the new beneficiaries. Unlike past year’s Kids’ World, we introduced a mass dance element to this year’s Kids’ World as we believed that doing so we can bond the whole camp together.

The mass dance would not have been successful and well received by the kids and the volunteers without the help of VM’s Co-chair, Goh Kok Yong who did the whole choreography of the mass dance. The kids loved the dance and wanted to dance on the table with Kok Yong as backstage dancers.

On top of the usual games played during Kids’ World, we made the kids and the volunteers paint their own group flag on the first day so as to let them have a sense of group identity. This idea of letting the kids paint their own flag were well received as some kids were able to show their talent in drawing. The kids and volunteers felt proud of their own group flag too as it was something that all of them put effort in together as a group.

The outing to the Singapore Zoo on the second day brought back a sense of nostalgia for the volunteers and also a new experience for some of the kids as some have never been to the Singapore Zoo before. The volunteers did a great job in ensuring that the kids assigned to them were well taken care of and no kids got lost during the outing. GREAT JOB volunteers! :)

The last day started off with stationed games around NTU. These games were planned with the idea of having educational elements in it. Games like “Protecting the Egg” with straws were played during stationed games to illustrate to the kids the moral that when united, even weak materials like straws will be able to protect a fragile egg when dropped from a height. After the stationed games, the groups headed over to Hall 15 function hall for the finale party. The party kicked off with the mass dance and prize presentation to the best kid dancers. The kids were really talented as they were able to remember the steps taught to them since day 1. The kids didn’t feel shy dancing on the stage and they were all feeling excited as they could perform in front of the whole Kids’ World. The buffet dinner started after the mass dance, and a video made by WSC PNP were shown during dinner. Shortly after dinner, groups were called up on to the stage for a short performance and prizes were presented to the groups.

The whole of Kids’ World ended with a mass photo taking on the stage and I’m sure everyone brought back with them a memorable experience.The Volunteer Management committee managed to pull off another successful and enjoyable Kids’ World and it will definitely leave a deep impression to all. It was all worthwhile seeing a smile on the kids’ faces! :)

The long awaited event has come again...

Kids' World 2009 is a 3-day non residential camp organized by Volunteer Management under Welfare Services Club of NTU for 100 children from different family service centres, of whom these children come from families with financial problems, divorced parents, behavioural problem, family violence etc. This camp will be held in NTU as well as an excursion outside NTU.

A one day event held for Autistic children attending school at the Asian Women Welfare Association (AWWA)

It has been a wonderful experience organizing this zoo outing for autistic children. The response for our event was overwhelming, with many students on the wait list as we were unable to accommodate so many of them. After the event, the organizing committee(VM) and the volunteers left the zoo with a heavy heart, and a meaningful insight to the lives of the autistic children and their caregivers. We applaud the teachers for their patients and love for the children and some of the volunteers felt the need to do more for these underprivileged children. In fact, one of our volunteers had already volunteered herself to help out in a weekly hydrotherapy session for the children.

We hope that after this event, more people would have already taken their first step, to be interested and willing in doing volunteering work.

In conjunction with the International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD), a team from Volunteer Management (VM), a sub-club under the Welfare Services Club (WSC) of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), organized a fundraiser and mini exhibition on campus.
The objective of this event was to create awareness and raise funds for CCF and at the same time promote volunteerism in NTU.
For a week, we set up booths and displays of posters and photograph from CCF to aid in educating the public about CCF. At the same time, we did volunteer recruitment and sold golden ribbons and other merchandises to raise funds.

KIDS' WORLD 08

Our yearly Kids World event has always been to raise awareness and understanding of underprivileged children in Singapore. It provides an avenue for NTU staff and students to spend their time in a meaningful way. Lastly, to allow these underprivileged children to engage in interesting activities, as well as to take home valuable lessons and skills after the camp.

The first day was mainly filled with ice breakers, handicrafts and station games. The volunteers and children were split into 10 groups with 1 volunteer attached to each child Everyone bonded very well on the first day and all of them seemed to have had great fun.

On the second day we went to the science centre. We can see that the children and volunteers really enjoyed themselves and learning about science together at the same time. The children to explore the whole of science centre, which allowed them to enjoy a full science centre experience.

Finally, the last day, started off with station games, which included some sports and simple team games. Our finale which included a buffet, performances by each of the 10 groups, a video made by WSC MI on the 3 days and also a mini prize presentation for the colouring and bookmark making competition.
